Interview with Winnie
Wilson: Hello, Winnie. Today I am going to ask you some questions about your favourites, which are the manga comics, are you ready for the questions?
Winnie: Sure, go ahead.
Wilson: Thanks very much. Well, as we all know, Winnie, you are a comic lover, that’s undeniable. How about online games?
Winnie: I often play online games when I am free, especially the online games which is free of charge. I had a great time chatting with people online and meeting friends in the games. I had a lot of fun.
Wilson: What’s the online game about?
Winnie: Well, it is about a fantasy in a created world. The story background is based on somewhere like Northern Europe, and the major aim of the game is to fight against the monsters, and of course the minor aim is to earn money to obtain better armor and better weapons.
Wilson: That sounds great! As you said you have made a lot of friends online, are they playing that online game frequently?
Winnie: Of course, I have chosen a male character in the game and therefore I have met a “wife” in the game, while the girl is from Taiwan and now we are couples!
Wilson: Good! How about animations?
Winnie: Oh, animations, yes, I used to watch a lot of animations, like Death Notes. I usually watched those from the internet or buying the DVD from HMV. The animation gave me a different feel when comparing with the manga comics. I loved the love stories in the manga comics while I loved action scene in the animations.
Wilson: Really? Why? And why you love comics?
Winnie: Animated movies usually attract me by the action scene because that will make me feel good by making the story more compressed, and concentrated. I usually watch comics which are about Love. There are different kinds of love stories in Japan, which are about teacher with students, boy love, which is homosexual topics, and also classmate love, etc. Those topics are fairly hot in Japan, maybe because they are open-minded. I enjoyed watching those kinds of manga comics.
Wilson: Cool, why those kinds of comics are so attractive?
Winnie: Well, I really don’t know, maybe it is because the love topic is not as close minded as films or stories or comics from China and other places. Films from the US have good topics but their comic style is not suitable for us, the Asian people. We would like to see the picture from the comics to be more cute and beautiful of course. It is possible that the comic style of the US is not acceptable because we have been influenced by the Japanese culture for 20 to 30 years, just as people often love Japanese food more than American styled beef steak. I believe it is caused by difference in culture and the style of comics when compared to the US. The love topics in other places are fairly close-minded, and less people like to publish boy love stories. Comics in Hong Kong are usually action topic which is people fighting against each others, come on, it is boring!
Wilson: I agree with you there. I usually watch comics from Japan. I had never watched comics from Hong Kong. That’s sucks.
Winnie: Well, that’s true.
Wilson: How about Japanese Otaku? Do you know this term?
Winnie: Of course, that topic is hot when the movie called Densha Otoko from Japan is shown in Hong Kong. This describes the manga comics’ lovers, right? I am not acting like them, at least I have a lot of friends, like you!
Wilson: Thank you for your information, I think I have to buy that DVD and watch!
Winnie: That’s a good movie, I believe you can get a lot of information from that.
Wilson: Let’s go back to our topic, manga comics. What is the special feature that attracts you?
Winnie: Features? Is that mean those kind of things that is different from comics from Hong Kong?
Wilson: Yes.
Winnie: Oh well. The drawing style is totally different. I love Japanese manga comics because those pictures are cute. The topic of manga comics has a great variety which will never make me bored. Some of the scene although it is not really suitable for all age, it is a good thing to watch the real scene from the world, not a totally created world, like those boring American hero comics and movies.
Wilson: Do you mean Japanese manga comics are more realistic?
Winnie: They are often more realistic than any other comics. Because of this, more people will treat it as the real world, and believe that they can have the same scenario in their life. Wilson, you should go to watch the movie and get more research!
Wilson: I just know little about this, can you tell me more?
Winnie: Yes of course. People in Japan like those kind of comics and they are addicted to it. How can I say? They are totally addicted! They like to go to the shops that selling figures and posters and games! Some are even staying all day long in their house and usually never get out of their house. They only like to browse the internet, watch the anime, comics, playing online game or go to the forums to meet net friends. I am currently doing a research about the people staying all day long in their house, which is called hikikomori in Japanese.
Wilson: Oh, your research topic is similar to my research.
Winnie: Not really, Wilson, you will figure out later. The movie Densha Otoko will show you a lot of things.
Wilson: Really? Thank you very much, Winnie.
Winnie: Not at all. I have to do my project now, see you later.
